Adult Christian Education
Adult education at St. Mark's has taken many forms. "Dinner and a Movie" has been one of the most recent offerings, where a movie is chosen which highlights themes pertinent to life, relationships, attitudes, Christian or otherwise. A light meal is served before the movie is shown, and discussion follows - bring your own popcorn! Sunday morning Forums, book groups and Bible study are also offered at various times during the year.
Altar Guild
The work of the Altar Guild goes on quietly behind the scenes; it is a special ministry whose mission is to care for everything that relates to the Altar. In addition, they shoulder a wide range of other responsibilities: making or purchasing vestments and linens; managing flower monies and orders, replenishing the supply of bread, wine and candles; advising about memorial gifts for use in the sanctuary and participating in special rites as the stripping of the altar on Maundy Thursday, and decorating for Easter and Christmas.
Lay Readers and Lectors
Lay Readers participate in the Processional, say the Prayers of the People, administer the chalice in Holy Communion, and assist in various other ways as directed by the priest. In the absence of a Lector, the Lay Reader may also read the appointed scripture lessons. Instruction is provided for those wishing to serve in this capacity, and a license will then be issued by the Diocese.
Lectors are those people who volunteer to read the scripture lessons appointed for each service. Lectionary bulletin inserts are mailed by the parish secretary to those scheduled to be Lectors prior to the weekly services. Older youth are also welcome to be Lectors.
